THE HIGHEST FORM OF LIFE

What constitutes the highest form of living matter? Are we correct in assuming Homo sapiens, rational man, is supreme? Further, is there actually such an ultimate supreme state, and by what value is it so determined? Supremacy of life forms is judged by man with respect to certain phenomena, the natural functions, which they exhibit. We are all aware that certain animals have a keener sense of perception than man; they are stronger and swifter, and their senses of hearing, sight, and smell exceed those of humans. Therefore, how do we evaluate the acclaimed supremacy of man? Man’s outstanding quality is said to be his intelligence and the traditional supernatural element of soul, which he is likewise said to possess. Why is one animal fleeter than another, or his hearing and scent more acute? Were such faculties arbitrarily conferred upon him? Would it not be discriminatory to give a preferred advantage to one species and not to another? The answer to this depe

NEW DISCOVERINGS THAT WILL SHOCK YOU

THE GAP BETWEEN MAN AND MONKEY             A recent analysis of the DNA of chimpanzees and orangutans, as well as of certain monkeys and macaques, has revealed that their genetic makeup is not as similar to man’s as scientists once thought. Large difference in DNA, not small ones, separate apes and monkeys from both humans and each other. There are large deletions and insertions sprinkled throughout the chromosome, explains Kelly Frazer of Perlegen Sciences, the California, U.S.A., company that did the analysis. New Scientist characterized the difference as a yawning gap that divides monkeys and us.            Some have theorized that an infinite number of monkeys pecking away on an infinite numbers of typewriters would eventually write the complete works of Shakespeare. So researchers at Plymouth University in England gave six monkeys one computer for a month. The monkeys failed to produce a single word. The six monkeys at Paignton Zoo in

SILENT BABIES AND BREASTFEEDING

SOME physicians in Japan say there is an increase in the number of babies who neither cry nor smile. Pediatrician Satoshi Yanagisawa calls them silent babies. Why do the babies stop expressing their emotions? Some doctors believe that the condition arises because babies are deprived of parental contact. The condition is called enforced helplessness. One theory suggests that when needs for communication are constantly ignored or misinterpreted, the infants eventually give up trying.        If a baby is not given proper stimulations at the right time, the part of his brain that makes him emphatic may not develop, suggests Dr. Bruce Perry, chief of psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital. In cases of profound emotional neglect, capacity to feel empathy may be irretrievably lost. Dr. Perry believes that in some case substance abuse and adolescent violence can be linked to such early life experiences.       Queensland researchers who studie
